It wasn't a hospital as we understand it today. We would call it a poor house. Here the poor and frail old people could get free living space and food if they could not look after themselves and had no family to look after them. It wasn't a luxury stay, but they had a roof over their heads and could avoid begging. There was also a church room so they could access the church.
