Bishop Konrad von Hildesheim (1221 - 1246) separated the parish Wahrenholz from the Archidiakonatskirche Hankensbüttel. He probably had the lower, Gothic part of the church tower built, to which later a stone nave was added. From this time comes the clock-bell, which is still in operation and beats the quarter-hour, and the baptismal font, which is now in the tower entrance. The church was named after St. Nicholas, Bishop of Myra, and St. Catherine, a martyr at the beginning of the 14th century, Church of St. Nicolai and Catherine.

The Wahrenholz stork's nest is located on the roof of the church. The associated information board is west of the church on the footpath. The stork's nest is best seen from the eastern side. The forecourt at the water mill is suitable for stopping.
