As a result of the Reformation, the Catholic provost of Angermünde St. Marienkirche, Dr. Martinus Klettenberg on the new teachings of Martin Luther. Since he remained as the first Protestant provost at St. Mary's in Angermünde, a large part of the community followed him. Three hundred years pass without notable traces of Catholic life.
In 1845 the first Catholic immigrants, textile merchants from Westphalia and Eichsfeld, found their way here. On June 28, 1894, the foundation stone for the new church was laid. The inauguration took place on November 8 of the same year.

The patronage "Maria (or in other spelling:) Mariä Himmelfahrt" of this church in Angermünde refers to one of the many commemoration days or festivals in honor of the Blessed Mother Mary. It goes back to the feast of her bodily assumption into heaven, which the Church celebrates annually on August 15.
In many rural areas it is customary for the population to collect bunches of herbs (called "Kruggweusch" in the Rhenish dialect) on this day and to bless them in the festival service.
