The foundation stone for the construction of the church and monastery was laid in 1626 by the Prince-Abbot of Fulda, Johann Bernhard Schenk zu Schweinsberg. The monastery was occupied in 1631 by four Benedictine nuns from Kühbach Abbey near Augsburg. Salome von Pflaumern served as the first prioress from 1631 onward. The early decades were marked by great hardship due to the Thirty Years' War; the sisters were forced to flee from enemy troops several times, and the monastery was repeatedly plundered. It remained dependent on the Bishopric of Fulda until its secularization in 1802.
