Scythes, straw knives, sickles, sightings: no longer a lucrative business today. In 1988 the need for scythes in Germany was estimated at 250,000 - a number that the Freudenthaler scythe hammer in Schlebusch produced almost alone in 1914. Already in 1779 there was a weir and mill system with hammer mill in the picturesque river floodplain of the Dhünn, from 1837 H. P. Kuhlmann Söhne manufactured heavy cutters for agriculture and forestry there. The last Rhenish scythe forge closed in 1985, but since 2005 there have been demonstrations, temporary exhibitions, theater and concerts.
