The almost 500-year-old oak is one of the oldest and most famous trees in the Netherlands. The "Kroezeboom" stands north of Fleringen and was formerly used as a border marker and place of pilgrimage. In the 16th and 17th centuries there was already a field chapel here.
Nowadays, occasional events take place here, and it is even an official wedding venue.

Crucifixion tree or cross tree: a tree that indicates a boundary or intersection. Such trees could have different functions: as a place of justice, a sacred place or a boundary marker. Stones or trees were often used on the communal ash trees in the eastern Netherlands as marking points from which the fields could be divided. The Kroezeboom will have been planted for that purpose on the es of the Marke near Fleringen, probably between 1500 and 1600, as a 'loakboom' or markeboom.
