    As in many villages and towns in Drenthe, De Brink formed the center of the city. In Assen you will find here, among other things, the Drents Museum and a number of nice terraces.

    The monastery church, also called abbey church, originally belonged to the Cistercian nunnery Mariënkamp in Assen. In 1276 a document mentions the presence of the monastery, but it was probably already established in Assen in 1260.

    Soon after it was taken into use, the building became too small and in 1895 a new Post and Telegraaf office was built on the Zuidersingel in Assen. The building on the Brink has since been used as a National Day Normal School (1905-1926), library and youth center. Today it is used as an office. The building is a recognized national monument.
