In the Belgian Scheut, the Flemish priest Theophiel Verbist founded the Missionaries of Scheut in 1862. In 1899, these missionaries were given ‘Oud Sparrendaal’ and 38 hectares of land as a gift. They set up the mission house Sint Franciscus Xaverius there, with the aim of recruiting more Dutch people for missionary work. They started giving lessons and courses. In 1929, the growing brotherhood built a new complex with a chapel ‘Nieuw Sparrendaal’ right next to the old country house. A minor seminary with boarding school for boys who wanted to become missionaries.
