The fountain and the former book hall behind it were designed in 1914 by chief building director Fritz Schumacher, but were not completed until 1926 due to the First World War. The bronzes of the fountain come from the workshop of the artist Georg Wrba and weigh 250 kg each. Left and right Adam and Eve with a sea lion. The building, reminiscent of a temple, with Doric columns as an urban accent, in which the public book hall was housed, is used as a restaurant and information point.

The Mönckeberg fountain with its water-spouting sculptures is one of the most popular monuments in Hamburg's city center. Two nudes with sea lions flank a stele crowned by a lion. The fountain in front of the former library was built between 1914 and 1926 according to plans by the chief building director Fritz Schumacher. The design of the nudes with sea lions goes back to Georg Wrba, the lion is a free replica of the original destroyed in World War II.
