New weapon techniques made it necessary to expand the defense systems in the Middle Ages. Therefore, the city wall, which is still preserved today, was built around 1500. The main work on the 3,300 m long wall was supervised by the master builder Andreas (Anreischke). During the Thirty Years' War, the facilities were strengthened, later (1643) demolished at the request of the Swedes, and restored after another 25 years by order of the elector.
