The mountain newt pond is a place of retreat and breeding for protected amphibians. In this respect, people should be very cautious here, enjoy the sight and avoid anything that endangers their existence, for example damming the inflow or dropping their rubbish.

Especially an experience for every Lurch fan. Pond, mountain and crested newts were still everywhere in the 1960s, and still many in the 1970s. Unfortunately, they are now rare. That is why the biotopes in which they can live and reproduce are extremely important and must continue to be created.

Since 2018, the nature conservationists of the nature working group in the Schönfeder Hochland have been trying to revive the mountain newt pond into a biotope. In autumn 2018 the pond, which is located in the upper third of the Wachwitzgrund, silted up. Even the Wachwitzbach, which normally feeds the pond with water, had dried up due to the heat and drought. Immediate measures had to be taken to save the biotope.
