The Rosenstraße in the former Marienviertel is one of the oldest streets in Berlin. Here was the first synagogue of the city from 1714 until its destruction in World War II. The adjoining administrative building was the scene of a unique act of civil resistance in the time of National Socialism, to which the sculptor Ingeburg Hunzinger dedicated this monument.

Must see! The film "Rosenstraße" with Katja Riemann provides the background to this memorial. In the spring of 1943, Jewish husbands from mixed confessional marriages were interned in the Jewish welfare office located at this point before they were to be deported to the concentration camps. However, their wives were able to secure their release with vigils and demonstrations.
