One for a lovely short walk or as part of a longer hike, this family friendly fell puts you amongst the majesty of the Lake District without having to exert too much effort. If you fancy it, the looming peak of Grasmoor can be reached via Whiteless Peak and Wandope from this fell too.
Low-lying with disproportionately huge views
With a summit standing at 1,165 feet (355 m), hiking trails up Rannerdale Knotts allow you to bag a Wainwright while you’re there. This fell is elongated and the easiest route up is from Buttermere, where reasonably gentle gradients across grass and bracken slopes lead you onto Low Bank. Hiking onwards, the views are already wonderful but the summit is where the magic happens.
Standing directly over Crummock Water, the craggy top affords beautiful views in every direction. To the north, Grasmoor towers above while Starling Dodd rises tall to the south west. High Stile can be seen directly south and in between, Buttermere village burbles along by itself. Looking along Crummock Water, you can gaze across the valley floor onwards to Loweswater, glinting in the distance.
Rannerdale Knotts is hikable throughout the year but care should be taken in winter conditions and appropriate equipment used as necessary. Buttermere has accommodation and food whilst Keswick can be accessed via a typical Lakeland single track pass.
