The Collegium Maius was the main building of the Old University in Erfurt, which existed from 1392 to 1816. This makes Erfurt the third German city with a university after Heidelberg (1386) and Cologne (1388). After it was closed in 1816, it was re-established in 1994 and teaching has resumed since the winter semester of 1999/2000.

The Collegium Maius was once the main building of the oldest university in Germany, Martin Luther's place of education. It was completely destroyed in World War II and rebuilt, including the keel-arch portal. At the third oldest university in Germany, philosophy was taught as a compulsory undergraduate course. Students had to complete a degree in seven liberal arts before they could specialize in medicine, for example.

From 1392 to 1816 the Collegium Maius existed as the main building of the Old University in Erfurt. It is so important because only a few Central European universities can boast a "large college" from the late Middle Ages. This is also where the COLLEGIUM MAIUS EVENING takes place & the building became a central place of remembrance for Lutherstadt. A bronze plaque marks the former main university building.
