As the most important fortification in the province of Salzburg, the Hohensalzburg Fortress has enjoyed regular study by archaeologists, historians and building researchers since the early 19th century. Important discoveries were made through excavations and investigations in the 1990s. One of the greatest sensations of European medieval research was uncovered: hidden in the extensive building groups of the fortress, the high medieval main castle of the archbishopric of Salzburg has largely been preserved. The representative, Palatinate-like facility presented
represents a glamorous highlight of the high medieval secular architecture in Central Europe.
