Today there is a hotel in the former Schönburg castle. Visitors can still tour the medieval castle and eat at the restaurant. In the tower museum you can learn everything about the history of the castle and its defense tactics. On the top level of the tower, a viewing platform awaits you with a magnificent all-round view.

During the summer months, the museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday (10 a.m. to 6 p.m.). In the low season on weekends from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Entry is 3 euros. All information about the castle can be found here: hotel-schoenburg.com.

Schönburg am Rhein Castle is a 12th-century hilltop castle near Oberwesel in the Rhein-Hunsrück district in Rhineland-Palatinate. The castle is located in the UNESCO World Heritage Upper Middle Rhine Valley. The Schönburger grape variety was named after her. Since April 2011, the 25 meter high gate tower of the Schönburg has housed an informative museum on the subject of castle building, monument protection and castles during war. There is a steel viewing platform on the top floor, which offers wonderful views of the Rhine Valley.

The Schoenburg has an exciting past. Located on a wooded hill, it was first documented in 1149. The family of those to Schönburg built them into a spacious residential castle. In 1689 the troops of Louis XIV destroyed the lordly abode. In 1885 the German-American Rhinelander traveled the Rhine Valley. In search of true romance he took pleasure in the ruin and decided to rebuild the castle according to old plans. Since 1950, the castle is owned by the city Oberwesel.
