The Blue Lagoon is a lake created in a lava field of 1226, filled with wonderfully warm water 38C that comes from the nearby Svartsengi hot water and power station. there the water, which is extremely salty (12.5%), is used to heat 'normal' water. It comes from 1800 m deep sources and has a temperature of 70 °C. A natural mixture of minerals, blue algae and silica/silica forms a white deposit on the bottom of the lake and gives the water a typical milky-light blue color. The water and white clay of the Blue Lagoon are attributed a beneficial effect.

Originally a wastewater lake of a geothermal power plant, the Blue Lagoon Iceland thermal spa is one of Iceland's main attractions. The water is 37 to 42 degrees warm and is pumped up from 2000 meters depth. It consists of 2/3 of seawater and 1/3 of fresh water and is rich in silica, minerals, rounded off with a hint of hydrogen sulfide.

The blue color is formed when the silica contained in the water reflects the light. The bathroom is now regularly booked, a pre-booking via the Internet and credit card advance payment is essential.
