The citadel of Besançon covers twelve hectares on a site whose strategic importance is evoked from 58 BC. BC, by Julius Caesar, built 1668-1693 on Mount St. Stephen, one of the hills that constitute the natural protections of the capital of Franche-Comté. It overhangs over 100 m the old town and offers a great view of Besançon and its surroundings.
