The village of Nitzow nestles between the Havel and the forest, about five kilometers north of the Hanseatic city of Havelberg. The settlement goes back to the time of the Wende and is older than the town of Havelberg. Today, visitors can hardly find any traces of this past. Only the Gothic church, the oldest building in town, bears witness to the past. The construction of the church probably began immediately after the completion of the Havelberg Cathedral, which was consecrated in 1170.

In the foundation deed of the Havelberg diocese from 948, a civitas Nizem, which was probably a larger Slavic castle settlement at the time, is also mentioned. In 1344 it became villa Nytzowe, a village. But the place probably wasn't entirely insignificant if you look at its church. This is a very impressive brick building that would also fit in a small town.
