On the relatively small site, you can get a vivid insight into the times of peat cutters. It's hard to imagine the conditions under which this work was carried out. A few small cottages with authentic furnishings provide insight into the humble living conditions of those days. Across the street, there's a small café with a separate restroom, which is missing from the museum grounds.

As an open-air museum at the top end, the Van Velen complex is now one of the sights of the city of Papenburg, which provides impressive and vivid information on the history, development and prosperity of the city in the once marshy area in a stimulating setting.
For a few euros, the complex and buildings can be viewed inside and out. Guided tours are also offered. It is worth paying this nice museum a visit.
