Located on a rocky island of the Loire at the confluence of navigable waterways, the former fortified city of Decize offers its visitors many discoveries of the rich city heritage. Examples are the towers of the battlements, remains of the medieval city walls; the pleasant promenade by the market halls, a long shady avenue of beautiful plane and linden trees; the ruins of the former castle of the Counts of Nevers; the clock tower with its statue of the lawyer Guy Coquille; the Saint-Aré church, with its 11th-century choir and 7th-century Merovingian crypt.
