Today's west tower is the third tower at this point. In the 14th century the first was built as a church tower, in the 17th century the second. It was destroyed in 1855 and the remains were blown up in 1914. The new west tower was built in 1933 and has been a youth hostel since the end of World War II.

The tower can be climbed and there is also a bistro: jugendherberge.de/jugendherbergen/wangerooge-565/portraet.

The name of the tower, which had two predecessors in the history of the island, is based on its location on the western end of the island. The west tower is now a listed building.
