The tree trunk is a hollow body and the bees nest there.
The access to the hive with the honeycombs is on the back...closed as a precaution!

BIENOTELS are bee dwellings in the form of mostly life-size figures. This folk art from the 18th century is being revived according to old traditions. The figures, carved from wood, are hollowed out inside and offer honeybees species-appropriate housing. At the same time, they can be found as individual art objects in many places and theme trails. The honey yield is irrelevant here.
