    Anyone who visits Heiligenblut am Großglockner for the first time immediately notices that this place, the houses, the pilgrimage church and much more have existed longer than one would expect at first glance. The turbulent and long history of Heiligenblut begins at a time that most of us don't know much about and it goes on much further. Because Heiligenblut am Großglockner, its beauty, its cultural assets and its breathtaking natural environment will be there for a very long time. Long enough to give many generations of interested visitors the chance to enjoy it.

    The figure on the outer facade of the church in Heiligenblut - reaching from the floor to the roof - is that of Saint CHRISTOPHERUS. The Latin name means "Christ-bearer", and that is exactly how he is always depicted: as a giant carrying a child (Jesus, the Christ) across a river.
    In the Middle Ages it was popular belief that if you had seen Christopher, you would not suffer an unprepared death that day. Therefore, the external façade with his portrait, which is visible from afar, was certainly very valued in the village.
