Through the Schwalm gate, which was designed as a weir - one of the two former gates of the Brüggen Fortress - one reached Dutch-Spanish territory as soon as one had half crossed the then border river Schwalm. From the Schwalm you can still see the size of the former fortress gates by the edge of the gate. The customs station and the renting agency were also located in the Schwalmpforte. In 1770 the Rentei received its present form.
