In 1679, at this point, a French officer was murdered and buried. But even around 19 November 1944, heavy fighting took place at the Cross of the Cross during the Second World War. So it is found in American war diaries. Spurs of the raging for weeks battle in Hürtgenwald. A day later, the nearby Laufenburg was the scene of bitter fighting.

Around November 19, 1944, heavy fighting took place near the French Cross (that's what the American war diaries say) and a day later the Laufenburg was the scene of bitter fighting. German soldiers who stayed at the castle inflicted considerable losses on the Americans. The inhabitant of the castle, who was also staying at the castle with his family, holed up in the cowshed. Eventually, the Americans managed to encircle the castle and set it ablaze with tank fire. Ultimately, on November 21, 1944, the German defenders gave up and were taken captive.
