The Jewish cemetery in Hohenems is as old as the first Jewish settlement in 1617, when Count Caspar von Hohenems welcomed 12 Jewish families from southern Germany and Switzerland (Rheineck) into his imperial county. He also allocated them a piece of land in the so-called "Schwefel" (Sulfur), on the southern edge of Hohenems, which they could use for Jewish burials. The cemetery is located on a wooded slope of the "Schwefelberg" (Sulfur Mountain). In total, there are probably well over 500 graves on the site. 370 gravestones have survived to this day.

A special place steeped in history.

We were drawn to this site by an art object from the kub Bregenz. A musical voice hidden in the forest provided a connection to the exhibition space at the kub.

To visit the cemetery, you must first pick up the key from the Jewish Museum in Hohenems.

The modern Islamic Cemetery is located a short distance away.
