Since the 12th century water mills have existed at this location on the Lauter. Today's Bienwaldmühle, right on the French-German border, is a large, modern grain mill with a 120 kW turbine driven by hydropower. The mill processes around 15 tons of grain daily. The imposing attic building dates back to the 18th century and is a listed building.
The Lauterwehr of the mill was extended in 2011 with a so-called fish ladder to facilitate fishing and other river creatures to overcome the weir and to improve the ecological condition of the Lauter.

The mill is best understood from here: by the water.
But it is also worth driving around the site to the main entrance.
Oh yes, one more thing: the Lauter is also the border between Germany and France. But that has become so unimportant that there is not even a sign for it here. I think that's the way it has to be.
