In 1988, the East Berlin magistrate announced a competition for a monument "for the work of Jewish citizens in Berlin", a rather unusual process for the GDR (quote: Stefanie Endlich, 2007). The winner of the competition was the sculptor Karl Biedermann in collaboration with the landscape architect Eva Butzmann (married to the graphic artist Manfred Butzmann). In 1996, the monument was erected on Koppenplatz as part of the Senate program "Art in Urban Space".
