Between 1810 and 1820 large parts of the city wall and with them the city gates were demolished.
As a protection against enemies, the wall had become useless because of new offensive weapons, the stones were used as building material. Their height was reduced to a level that gave the residents of the houses adjacent to them a clear view.
The actual height is approximately preserved on the Steinhagen.
