Ulm's location on the Salt Road led to the construction of a salt barn in 1592, a municipal building for temporary storage during the rock salt trade. This "gold of the Middle Ages" was vital to survival, as it could be used to extract the table salt needed at the time to preserve food. Since 1991, the Ulm salt barn has been the home of the Museum of Bread Culture.

This warehouse was also built by the imperial city of Ulm. 1592 as a grain magazine. At times salt was also stored here (hence the current name Salzstadel) and then the building was used as a barracks.
The building has been used as a museum of bread culture since 1991.

Nearby you will find beautiful, very old merchants' houses. Like almost everywhere in the old town.
