The Riedtor is part of the medieval city fortification. Only a few decades ago the road led through the gate in the direction of the Thuringian Forest. In Arnstadt there are only two preserved city gates, the Riedturm (this highlight) and the Neutorturm. Since the Hussites posed a threat and the residents of Arnstadt wanted to protect themselves from imminent rebellions, the ring wall and the city gates had to be reinforced in the 15th century. The Neutorturm was subsequently embedded in the city wall, also known as the "Hohe Mauer". Source: arnstadt.de/sightseeing
