The Grünten rises as one of the northernmost mountains in the Allgäu Alps on the border of the municipalities Burgberg im Allgäu, whose core town is at the southwest foot, and Rettenberg, whose core town is at the north foot. Its summit is about 5.5 km northeast of Sonthofen. To the west extends the valley of the Iller, into which the Ostrach flows near Sonthofen, and to the south that of the Starzlach (with the Starzlachklamm), which flows into the Ostrach near the Erzflöße district of Burgberg.

The Grünten, also known as the “Guardian of the Allgäu”, is a very distinctive mountain. It is located near the communities of Rettenberg and Burgberg in the Allgäu. With a height of 1738 meters, the Grünten is not a particularly high mountain, but due to its isolated location it offers impressive views and is a popular destination. There are mountain bike routes around the mountain.

The Grünten also has cultural and historical significance for the region, which makes it a special symbol of the Allgäu.
