Schanzenviertel is the commonly used name for Hamburg's smallest district, Sternschanze. The district takes its name from the star-shaped Sternschanze defense system, built in 1682 and largely demolished at the beginning of the 19th century. Schulterblatt is the main street, frequented by pedestrians. Here, there are many shops, cafés, bakeries, restaurants, and other small stores, some of which offer very special items. Along with the Reeperbahn, the Schanzenviertel is Hamburg's most popular nightlife and entertainment district. The "Rote Flora" cultural center is also home to the flagship of the city's left-wing and autonomous scene.

For me, a visit to Hamburg is always from St. Pauli and a stroll in Schanzenviertel. A lucky bag from alternative shops. Some are cool, some interesting, some hip and somehow over the top, but the mix is awesome.

Even if more and more houses are being extensively renovated, there is still that neighborhood charm, this otherness. I like the bright colors, the creative stickers, graffiti, the hip shops. Hopefully not everything will be cleaned away.
