The water-rich area with many streams should be dammed up here. But due to poorly neglected soil conditions, the foundation broke relatively quickly after the erection and a dam part was torn away.

July 2020: the kiosk is self-service outside of opening hours (trial, if it works, they may keep it working like this). We were there at 8am and still were able to get a Birell (can from a fridge) as well as Kofola on drought! There is a price list and you then leave the money in a dedicated box. The have all possible beverages as well as cookies, or bike repair tools free to use.

What is the historical significance of the Protržená Dam Ruins?

The Protržená Dam, also known as the Desná Dam, was constructed between 1912 and 1915 for flood control. Tragically, it burst on September 18, 1916, just ten months after completion, releasing 250,000 cubic meters of water. This catastrophic event claimed 65 lives and destroyed dozens of homes in the nearby town of Desná. Today, the ruins stand as a Czech cultural monument and a powerful reminder of engineering failure and its consequences, offering a unique historical lesson.

Are there specific viewpoints or natural features to look out for at the Protržená Dam Ruins?

Beyond the remnants of the dam itself, such as the gate tower and parts of the dam body, visitors can explore the former reservoir area, which is now a dense forest. The preserved underground tunnel, originally intended to channel water to the Souš Reservoir, is also a notable feature and an important site for bat hibernation. Informative boards around the site provide historical context and blueprints of the dam.

How can I get to the Protržená Dam Ruins using public transport?

While direct public transport to the immediate trailhead might be limited, visitors can typically reach nearby towns like Desná or Albrechtice v Jizerských horách by bus or train. From there, it's often possible to find local bus connections or embark on a hike to the ruins. It's advisable to check local transport schedules in advance for the most current information.

Where is the best place to park when visiting the Protržená Dam Ruins?

Parking is generally available near the access points to the educational trail. However, parking can fill up quickly, especially during peak seasons or on weekends. Arriving earlier in the day, particularly before mid-morning, is strongly recommended to secure a spot. Look for designated parking areas in Albrechtice v Jizerských horách or Mariánská Hora that provide access to the trails leading to the ruins.

Is the Protržená Dam Ruins suitable for a winter hike?

Yes, the Protržená Dam Ruins can be visited in winter, offering a beautiful 'winter wonderland' experience. However, hikers should be prepared for snowy and potentially icy conditions. Appropriate winter gear, including warm clothing and sturdy, waterproof footwear with good grip, is essential. Some trails might be less accessible or require snowshoes depending on snow depth.

Are the trails around Protržená Dam Ruins dog-friendly?

Yes, the trails around the Protržená Dam Ruins are generally dog-friendly, making it a great destination for hikers with canine companions. Please ensure your dog is kept on a leash, especially in areas where wildlife might be present or near other visitors. Always remember to clean up after your pet to maintain the natural beauty of the area.

What kind of amenities are available near the Protržená Dam Ruins?

While the immediate vicinity of the ruins is primarily natural, there is often a self-service kiosk available, even outside regular hours. This kiosk typically offers beverages like Birell and Kofola, snacks, and sometimes even bike repair tools. For more extensive amenities like restaurants, cafes, or accommodation, you would need to visit the nearby towns such as Desná or Albrechtice v Jizerských horách.

What is the typical trail length and difficulty for exploring the Protržená Dam Ruins?

The educational trail around the Protržená Dam Ruins is generally considered a pleasant and easy walk, suitable for most fitness levels. The length can vary depending on the specific route taken, but most visitors spend 1-2 hours exploring the main historical features. While the terrain is mostly gentle, there are slight elevation changes as you navigate the forest paths.

What caused the Protržená Dam to burst?

Investigations into the dam's collapse initially attributed it to undetectable geological instability. However, later studies, particularly one in 1996, concluded that the primary causes were errors in the project design. These included an insufficient geotechnical survey that failed to account for compressible and permeable layers beneath the dam, as well as an excessively large hydraulic gradient of the water, which compromised the dam's structural integrity.

Are there any specific safety considerations when visiting the ruins?

While the area is generally safe, visitors should remain on marked trails, especially given the historical nature of the site and the surrounding forest. Be mindful of natural elements like uneven terrain or slippery paths, particularly after rain or in winter. If exploring with children, supervise them closely. Always carry enough water and be prepared for changing weather conditions in the mountains.

Can I find maps of the hiking trails around Protržená Dam Ruins?

Yes, maps of the hiking trails in the Jizera Mountains, including those around the Protržená Dam Ruins, are widely available. You can often find them at local tourist information centers in nearby towns, or through various outdoor navigation apps and websites. The educational trail itself is well-marked with informative boards providing guidance.
