With its Romanesque-Gothic architecture, impressive 76-metre tower and rare chain library – the Librije – this national monument breathes history. The Walburgiskerk (also called Walburgkerk; German Walburgiskirche) is the main church of the city. The oldest part of the church dates from the 11th century. The present building dates mostly from the 13th century; the church has had its current appearance since the 16th century. Until 1261, the Walburgiskerk was Zutphen's only parish church. Since the conquest of Zutphen by Maurice of Orange in 1591, it has been in Protestant hands.
