On the way from Stein am Rhein, you pass through several pretty Swiss villages. About halfway along, you also pass through Berlingen, with its Protestant village church from 1842, which dominates the skyline.
In 894, Berlingen was first mentioned in a document under the name "Perenwang" or "Berenwang" – which means nothing other than the Bero field. Subsequently, the name of the lakeside settlement changed several times, to "Bernach" and finally to "Bernang," then to "Berlang." It wasn't until 1750 that the town received the name "Berlingen." Berlingen was already linked to the Reichenau Monastery in the early Middle Ages.
