    Cerro Gordo is an old abandoned mining town nestled in the Inyo Mountains close to Death Valley. The name translates to "fat hill". Between 1866 and 1957 prospectors where mining silver, lead and zinc ore. The town became famous and wealthy due to the Union Mine, where prospectors dug in several stories up to 900 feet deep. There are still some buildings left, including a general store and the American hotel.

    It was sold to two private owners who plan to restore the old town, but preserve its past to show it to visitors.
