The sunset on Hörnle is a dream. The quickest way leads over the south side, following the "Winterweg", then left at about 1150m. If you take the winter path in the direction of Grüntenhaus and goes from deadly direction to the summit, you have a wire insured rock ridge (dizziness and surefootedness!).

Free parking is available at the end of Burgberg, direction Alpenblick. From the beginning of the mast road all parking spaces are chargeable!

the shorter ascent of Burgberg is quite steep and not without. But those who have made it, will be rewarded with a hammer prospect over the Illertal and the Allgäuer high alps. And who needs additional adrenaline, should descend on the secured with a steel ridge rock direction Grüntenhaus. But beware. Never, if the stones are wet, or with wobbly legs, or even if you are afraid of heights! Have already crashed enough

    Sıkça sorulan sorular

Is the Burgberger Hörnle Summit Cross hike suitable for beginners or families with young children?

The Burgberger Hörnle is generally considered an intermediate to challenging hike. While the views are phenomenal, the terrain can be steep and gravelly. The intro mentions a 500-meter ascent and a 50-minute climb to the summit, which requires a good basic fitness level. For families with young children or absolute beginners, the shorter, steeper ascent from Burgberg might be too demanding. There are no specific 'beginner' routes mentioned, and some sections, especially the wire-secured ridge on the Winterweg, require surefootedness and a head for heights. It's best suited for those with some hiking experience.

Are there any dog-friendly options for hiking to Burgberger Hörnle Summit Cross?

Yes, dogs are generally welcome on the trails to Burgberger Hörnle. However, hikers should be aware that some sections, particularly the wire-secured rock ridge on the Winterweg towards Grüntenhaus, can be challenging for dogs, especially larger breeds or those not accustomed to scrambling. The Funkenweg might be a more suitable option as it avoids this specific technical section, though it is steeper. Always keep dogs on a leash, especially near livestock or other hikers, and ensure they are fit enough for the ascent and descent.

What are the specific differences between the Funkenweg and the Winterweg routes to the summit?

There are two main routes to the Burgberger Hörnle Summit Cross. The Funkenweg, located on the south side, is generally steeper and covers more open terrain, though it also passes through wooded sections. It involves about 60 meters more elevation gain than the other route. The route often referred to as the Winterweg (leading in the direction of Grünten) is known for its wire-secured rock ridge in its more challenging parts. This section demands a good head for heights and excellent surefootedness, especially when descending. Both paths offer scenic views through forests and alpine meadows, and they can be combined for a circular walk.

How long does a typical hike to Burgberger Hörnle Summit Cross take, including the return trip?

While the ascent to the summit is estimated to take about 50 minutes for the approximately 500 meters of elevation gain, a typical round trip hike will take longer. Depending on your chosen route (Funkenweg or Winterweg), your fitness level, and how long you spend enjoying the panoramic views at the summit, a complete hike could range from 2 to 4 hours. If you combine routes for a circular walk or extend your hike towards Grünten, it will naturally take longer.

What are the parking options for Burgberger Hörnle Summit Cross, and do they fill up quickly?

Free parking is available at the end of Burgberg, specifically in the direction of Alpenblick. However, parking spaces closer to the mast road are chargeable. Community tips suggest that parking can fill up fast, especially on weekends and during peak seasons like summer. Arriving before mid-morning is strongly recommended to secure a spot, particularly if you plan to hike on a busy day.

Is it possible to hike to Burgberger Hörnle Summit Cross in winter, and what should I consider?

The Burgberger Hörnle can be hiked earlier in the year than higher peaks like the Grünten due to its slightly lower elevation. However, a winter hike requires extra caution. The 'Winterweg' name refers to a specific route, not necessarily its suitability for winter conditions. If there's snow or ice, the steep and gravelly terrain, especially the wire-secured rock ridge, can become very dangerous. Hikers should only attempt a winter ascent with appropriate gear (e.g., microspikes, trekking poles), experience in winter hiking, and after checking current weather and trail conditions. Never attempt the secured ridge if stones are wet or icy.

Are there any cafes, restaurants, or accommodation options near the Burgberger Hörnle Summit Cross trailheads?

While the summit itself does not have amenities, the nearby village of Burgberg im Allgäu and the surrounding area offer various options. The Berggasthof Alpenblick is mentioned as a potential starting point, suggesting it might offer refreshments or accommodation. In Burgberg im Allgäu, you can find local cafes, restaurants, and guesthouses for pre- or post-hike sustenance and lodging. It's advisable to check their operating hours, especially outside of peak season.

What makes the views from Burgberger Hörnle Summit Cross so special?

Hikers consistently describe the views from Burgberger Hörnle Summit Cross as 'phenomenal' and 'a dream.' From the peak, you are treated to a spectacular panoramic vista over the picturesque Illertal valley, encompassing towns like Immenstadt and Sonthofen. Beyond the valley, the majestic Allgäuer high alps stretch out, creating a breathtaking backdrop. Many visitors highlight the sunset from this viewpoint as a particularly unforgettable experience, making the climb incredibly rewarding.

How crowded does Burgberger Hörnle Summit Cross get on weekends or during peak season?

As a popular destination in the Allgäu Alps, the Burgberger Hörnle Summit Cross can attract a significant number of hikers, especially on sunny weekends and during peak seasons like summer and early autumn. The limited parking availability, which fills up quickly, is an indicator of its popularity. If you prefer a quieter experience, consider hiking on weekdays, early in the morning, or later in the afternoon (keeping sunset times in mind) to avoid the busiest times.

What kind of gear is recommended for hiking to Burgberger Hörnle Summit Cross?

Given the steep, often gravelly, and sometimes rocky terrain, sturdy hiking shoes with good ankle support and grip are highly recommended. Trekking poles can also be very helpful for stability, especially on the descent. If you plan to tackle the wire-secured ridge section, ensure you are surefooted and have a good head for heights. Always carry sufficient water, snacks, sun protection, and appropriate layers of clothing, as weather conditions can change quickly in the mountains.

Are there any less crowded alternative trails or viewpoints similar to Burgberger Hörnle in the area?

While the Burgberger Hörnle is popular, the Allgäu region offers numerous other trails and summits. For those seeking a less crowded experience, exploring routes on the larger Grünten (often mentioned alongside Burgberger Hörnle) might offer more variety and spread out hikers, though its main trails can also be busy. Alternatively, researching lesser-known local peaks or exploring trails in the valleys might provide a quieter experience. komoot can help you discover a wide range of trails in the Allgäu Alps to find one that suits your preference for solitude.
