The stone mill is the oldest of the Rothenburg Tauber mills and was one of the most important. Grain was milled here until 1980.

The bridge over the Tauber, known as the double bridge, was built in the 14th century. Shortly before the end of the war in 1945 it was nonsensically blown up and rebuilt in the 1950s. From the bridge you have a wonderful view of the higher town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber.

The wow factor over the Tauber - from the double bridge the view of the old town is simply breathtaking and makes you want to immerse yourself in the city above the vineyards. The towers of St. Jakob and the town hall as well as the buildings of the Medieval Crime Museum are striking.

    Sıkça sorulan sorular

What types of hiking trails can I find around the Doppelbrücke Rothenburg ob der Tauber?

The Doppelbrücke is a popular starting point for various walks and hikes in the Tauber Valley. You'll find a mix of easy, scenic paths along the river, such as sections of the Mühlenweg (Mill Trail), which are suitable for leisurely strolls. There are also routes that ascend towards Rothenburg ob der Tauber, offering more challenging sections with moderate elevation gain and stunning views of the town.

Are there any loop trails that start and end at the Doppelbrücke?

Yes, several popular loop trails incorporate the Doppelbrücke. Many hikers enjoy routes that follow the Tauber River for a stretch, pass by historic mills like the Steinmühle, and then loop back, often involving a climb up to the town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber before descending back to the bridge. These loops vary in length and difficulty, providing options for different fitness levels.

Is the area around the Doppelbrücke suitable for families with children?

Absolutely! The gentle terrain along the Tauber River makes it ideal for family-friendly walks. Children will enjoy the natural surroundings, the river, and the impressive sight of the double bridge itself. Many paths are wide enough for strollers, though some steeper sections leading up to Rothenburg might be more challenging for very young children or those in pushchairs.

Are dogs allowed on the trails near the Doppelbrücke?

Yes, the trails around the Doppelbrücke are generally dog-friendly. Many visitors enjoy walking their dogs along the river paths and through the valley. It's always recommended to keep dogs on a leash, especially in areas where wildlife might be present or near other hikers and cyclists, and to clean up after your pet.

Is the Doppelbrücke or its surrounding trails wheelchair accessible?

The Doppelbrücke itself has a 1-meter-wide footpath alongside the roadway, making it accessible for pedestrians. However, the surrounding trails in the Tauber Valley can vary. While some sections along the river are relatively flat and might be manageable with a robust wheelchair, many paths are unpaved, and routes leading up to Rothenburg involve significant inclines, making them less suitable for wheelchair users.

What are the best times of year to visit the Doppelbrücke for hiking?

While the Doppelbrücke is beautiful year-round, spring and autumn are particularly recommended for hiking. In spring, the valley bursts with fresh greenery and blossoms, while autumn offers a spectacular display of colorful foliage. Summer is also popular, but can be warmer and more crowded. Winter hikes can be magical, especially after snowfall, but require appropriate gear for potentially icy conditions.

How crowded does the Doppelbrücke get, especially on weekends?

The Doppelbrücke is a significant landmark and can attract a fair number of visitors, especially on sunny weekends and during peak tourist seasons (summer, Christmas markets). To avoid the largest crowds, consider visiting early in the morning or later in the afternoon. Weekdays generally offer a more tranquil experience.

Are there any cafes or restaurants conveniently located near the Doppelbrücke?

While there aren't cafes directly on the bridge, the Tauber Valley is home to several historic mills, some of which have restaurants or beer gardens, such as the nearby Steinmühle. Additionally, the town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber, just a short hike uphill, offers a wide array of dining options, from traditional German restaurants to cozy cafes.

Where can I find parking when visiting the Doppelbrücke?

Parking options near the Doppelbrücke are available, though they can fill up quickly during busy periods. There are usually small parking areas along the roads in the Tauber Valley. Alternatively, you can park in Rothenburg ob der Tauber and hike down to the bridge, which is a popular approach for many visitors.

What historical significance does the Doppelbrücke hold?

The Doppelbrücke, originally built around 1330, was a crucial part of an important medieval trade route connecting Augsburg to Würzburg. It served as a customs bridge, contributing significantly to Rothenburg's wealth. Tragically, it was blown up in 1945 during WWII but was faithfully reconstructed and reopened in 1956, symbolizing resilience and preserving its unique architectural heritage.

What are the best viewpoints to capture photos of the Doppelbrücke and Rothenburg?

The bridge itself offers fantastic views of Rothenburg ob der Tauber perched high above the valley. For a classic shot of the Doppelbrücke with Rothenburg in the background, consider walking a short distance along the Tauber Valley trails, either upstream or downstream, to get a wider perspective. The paths leading up to Rothenburg also provide elevated vantage points for panoramic shots.
