Beautiful historic bridge, but can get very busy at peak times. The approach is by busy fast roads.

The first river crossing was built here in 1729. The story goes that the Prime Minister Robert Walpole was on his way to the House of Commons from Kingston and was unable to cross the Thames by ferry as the ferryman was in the pub, the Swan Inn. Unlike this grade II listed bridge, it was made from wood and was only the second bridge to be built in the city, after London Bridge.
