Just under six minutes by bus with line 111/112 from the Altona train station, you will find the Hafenbahnhof, slightly lowered below street level. The name is not a nostalgic pun, because the small red brick building with the green shutters is actually a 100-year-old office building of the former Altona port railway. The old tracks on the Große Elbstraße can still be seen today, the track bed is directly behind the house. From here, the only underground freight train connection in the Hamburg area led through the Schellfisch tunnel to Altona station.

The harbor station is a stone's throw from the banks of the Elbe and just before Övelgönne/Neumühlen.
In summer, this place is a real "place to be" because of its beautiful location, where you can spend a whole night. But its program also makes this place so lovable: on Mondays there is live jazz of a more modern kind, and at the weekend different DJs play soul, indie and sixties sounds. If you stop by on a Sunday, you can grab some cake from 2 p.m.

After the opening of King Christian VIII. Ostseebahn of the Altona-Kieler Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft (AKE) in 1845, the Altona port railway was used to deliver goods that had already been loaded in freight cars at Altona station to the quays of the Altona port and those waiting there cargo ships.
Conversely, goods were also transported on the facilities and with the vehicles of the port railway from the freight and especially the fishing ships to Altona station for long-distance goods traffic.
This made Altona the first town in the German-speaking region to offer direct goods handling between ships and trains.
