The Shrine of Remembrance was built as a memorial to the men and women of Victoria who served in World War I and was now a memorial to all Australians who served in. It was one of the largest memorials in Australia.

The Shrine of Remembrance was built to provide a place of mourning and remembrance for the 19,000 Victorians who died in World War I (1914-18). Today it is a place of remembrance for those who died in the line of duty and those who have sacrificed in all wars since the formation of Australian Federation in 1901.
Many were buried in graves far from home, so the Shrine provided a place for families to remember their loved ones.
It was designed by two returning soldiers to Melbourne, architects Philip Hudson and James Wardrop.
