The alley “An der Stadtmauer” is built with houses that lean against the Durlach city wall. The street is characterized by the round arches that once supported the battlements and the sandstone troughs that were used to fill with manure and were then covered with boards (popularly known as “sofas”). A beautiful path along the old city wall, with various historic buildings. Durlach's first city wall was built in the 13th century. The adjacent sections of the city wall are about 200 years younger.

Here you can clearly see how the old city wall was integrated into the buildings. The arches can still be seen in the alley "An der Stadtmauer".
Remains of the wall from the outside can still be seen at the former Ochsentor (east of it) and at the still standing Basler Tor (also east of it).
