The church, which dates back to the 12th century, is the old burial church of the Danish kings. Over twenty princes were buried here before the cathedral in Roskilde was designated as the burial church. The name plaques show how quickly the rulers died. The kings usually fell victim to murder and lists, because the Danish crown was a coveted object.
The church, whose basic internal structure is in Romanesque style, originally belonged to a Benedictine monastery. However, after the church almost fell victim to a serious fire in 1241, the interior was rebuilt in the Gothic style.
