The collecting line for the water from five springs in the foothills, which began at Hermülheim Castle, was increased after Cologne was raised to the status of a colony (around 50 AD). During the construction work required for this, the older line was used as a substructure: its channel was blocked with tuff blocks and the pillars for the new overhead line, which was laid out on arches, were erected on top of it.
