In 1682, Prince-Bishop Ferdinand von Fürstenberg laid the foundation stone for the Jesuit and University Church of Saint Francis Xavier, today's Market Church. After ten years of construction, it was consecrated on September 14, 1692. The post-Gothic design of the church had a major influence on the subsequent church construction of the Weser Baroque period. The Baroque altar, almost 21 meters high and a good ten meters wide, was completely destroyed in the Second World War and was completely reconstructed from 1989 to 2004 in eight construction phases using photos and templates. The cost: around four million euros.

The former Jesuit and university church, Saint Francis Xavier, also known as the "Market Church", is located in the city center of Paderborn, near the town hall square and right next to the Theodorianum Gymnasium, which uses the church for Catholic school services on Thursdays. In addition, the Market Church is the parish church of the inner-city parish of Saint Liborius, founded in 1998, alongside the Gau Church of Saint Ulrich and the Busdorf Church of Saint Peter and Andrew.[1]

The magnificent baroque interior has been reconstructed. Destroyed in the war, nothing was left of it and the wall behind the altar was simply decorated with a large cross.
