According to a legend, the counts for the import of butter became so high that the farmers no longer entered the city to sell their butter, but in front of the Heide Tor. Since many households had to walk too far in wind and weather, a wealthy virgin went to the count and asked them to pay the customs forever, whereupon the count told her to take a gold coin from Heide Tor to the market with every step, whatever had happened. In her honor, the golden figure was built on the market.

The fountain figure depicts the so-called Butter Maiden, a young woman with a butter churn or butter molds, and alludes to the once significant butter trade, which played a central role in the Zerbst market. The monument combines humorous folklore with local historical awareness and symbolizes the everyday life, work, and prosperity of the townspeople. As part of the market ensemble, the Butter Maiden complements the Roland statue, St. Nicholas Church, and the Tuscan Fountain, vividly bringing Zerbst's economic past to life.
