In 1928 the water tower was put into operation, mainly so that the steam locomotives in Erfurt could quench their "thirst".

The water came specially from the Thuringian Forest, as the Erfurt water is very calcareous.

After the steam locomotive era, in addition to the railway, the Erfurt power plants used the water from the belly of the tower.
Two storage tanks contain 50 cubic meters of drinking water from the Erfurt Steiger and 1000 cubic meters of service water from the Lütschetalsperre near Oberhof.

The water tower located here, built in 1926, served to supply the railway depot with water.
Fed by the soft water of the Lütschetalsperre, the aim was to prevent the formation of scale in the steam locomotives.
