Because so many crows once nested there, it was long known as the "Crow Tower." With the arrival of other feathered inhabitants, it was renamed the Stork Tower. It is part of the rampart system around Einbeck, which was completed around the year 1300 and was then about two kilometers long, and has been extensively renovated in recent years.

In earlier times, the tower was known as the Piccolomini Tower and the Crow Tower. It is likely that flocks of crows approached the city from the west during the winter and settled in the area around the tower.

Later, the moat was also colloquially called the "Crow Moat."

The tower was later renamed the Stork Tower because a pair of storks nested there for many years.

According to another source, the tower got its name from a newspaper report in the 1860s, which stated that children had thrown stones at the stork's nest on the tower.
